Dr. Kait Hutson, Ph.D., LMFT

Assistant Professor of Practice

Dr. Kait Hutson is a practicing systemic psychotherapist in Iowa City, Iowa. Her academic research and clinical expertise centers on religious trauma and shame. Dr. Hutson is skilled in providing therapeutic care to survivors of religious and spiritual violence, conversion therapy, institutional change efforts, cult experiences, and related forms of abuse. Walking with clients as they navigate healing from these multi-dimensional and complex traumatic experiences is her greatest passion as a therapist. Existential concerns, PTSD, and complex post-traumatic stress are her specializations in practice. Her original research on queer and trans experiences of religious trauma and shame has been presented in national and international forums. Dr. Hutson received her PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from Mount Mercy University in 2022 concentrating in neuroscience and psychophysiology. She holds membership in AAMFT, NASW, and the New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy. She loves philosophy, poetry, blues and jazz, hoodies, cooking, and adventures.
